LIGHTING GUERRILLA LABORATORY: Liquid Light & Architectural Mapping

LIGHTING GUERRILLA LABORATORY
Liquid Light & Architectural Mapping with Overhead Projectors – Workshop
Mentors: Laurenz Theinert & Andrej Štular
9.– 11. 4. 2026, Nova Gorica (SI) & Gorica (IT)
ART & PUPPETS PROJECT

In this workshop, we will immerse ourselves in the world of analogue light and projection techniques and explore creative possibilities with overhead projectors. The focus will be on liquid light and analogue architectural mapping – two experimental approaches that allow light, material, movement and space to be experienced directly and haptically.

Based on the liquid light technique that emerged in the 1960s, we will work with glass plates, coloured liquids, oils and pigments. By mixing, layering and moving, we will create live moving light images with organic forms, flowing structures and surprising colour spaces. Each projection is unique and ephemeral – an interplay of control and chance.

Building on this, we transfer the analogue projections onto the space itself. We analyse the existing architecture and develop space-related projections using transparencies, masks, stencils, drawings and objects. Shapes, edges and surfaces are specifically illuminated and transformed into living light images through superimposition, movement and manual animation, reinterpreting the space.

The workshop teaches basic techniques for working with overhead projectors, light sources and materials, as well as an understanding of light, colour, transparency, movement and spatial perception. The focus is on collaborative experimentation and an open creative process.

Finally, the resulting works will be displayed in a joint presentation.

LAURENZ THEINERT

»My art is about freedom – of meaning, opinion and messages. The works pose questions, not answers. They are an expression of hunches and processes. Instead of showing an image, they create a world within the world. The known is transformed, the unspoken becomes tangible. At best, amazement arises – a moment of open, direct perception«.

Laurenz Theinert is a photographer and live performing light and media artist. With his unique instrument, the ‘Visual Piano,’ he creates visual compositions that are shown around the globe – including in Toronto, São Paulo, London, Sydney, Berlin, New York, and Singapore.

At the heart of his work is the idea of image-free vision: his visual works deliberately break away from representational references and instead strive for an abstract, reduced aesthetic. The desire for radical dematerialisation led him from classical photography to light as an artistic medium.

Together with software developers Roland Blach and Philipp Rahlenbeck, Theinert developed the ‘Visual Piano’ – a MIDI-based image instrument that allows him to play light in real time and thus visually shape time and space. The performances are neither pre-programmed nor rigid: in open dialogues with musicians, complex light compositions emerge in the moment, immersively and expansively permeating the space.

Through 360° panoramic projections, Theinert creates a form of visual music – abstract, lively, immediate. There is deliberately no technical coupling between sound and image in order to enable a spontaneous and intuitive exchange between sound and light. The rigid boundaries of the space are lifted and transformed into a dynamic visual experience that is perceived through movement, rhythm and structure.

Laurenz Theinert does not simply create images – he designs light as language, space as instrument, time as composition.
